What Are the Best Restaurants in Oaxaca? Here Are the Top 10
Hey foodies! If you're planning a trip to Oaxaca City, you're in for a treat. I recently explored this incredible city with one of my oldest friends who came all the way from Australia. We had an absolute blast walking around and soaking up the vibrant atmosphere. The food in Oaxaca is out of this world—it's definitely a close second to Mexico City. Here are my top 10 restaurant recommendations in descending order from 10 to 1!
10. Onnno Lonchería
On our first morning in Oaxaca, we headed to Onnno Lonchería for brunch, and it was easily one of my top meals of the trip. The bread is to die for, and the vegetarian sandwich was fresh and bursting with flavor. The lavender latte with almond milk was probably the best I’ve ever had. The atmosphere is trendy, fun, and bright, and the service was excellent. Don’t miss their bakery location, Onnno Panadería, for the best pastries ever!
9. CRUDO
CRUDO offers a unique experience with its 6-seat Oaxacan/Japanese omakase. They switch up their ingredients based on what’s in season, and the staff is incredibly friendly and welcoming.
8. Pasillo de Humo
Located in the mercado, Pasillo de Humo is an awesome lunch spot. Just pick the kind of meat you want, and they’ll grill it up right there for you. Add some tortillas and garnishes, and you’re set. I’m a big fan of the cecina. This place is a must-visit in Oaxaca.
7. Memelas Doña Vale
Memelas Doña Vale is one of the best food experiences in Oaxaca. The market is busy, but it’s worth navigating through to get a seat at the counter. Go early because they close at noon. The memelas are unforgettable and totally worth the wait.
6. Restaurant Tierra del Sol
Restaurant Tierra del Sol offers an unforgettable dining experience with its “3 generaciones mole,” which was the best I had in Oaxaca. The freshly-made tortillas demonstration in the waiting area and rooftop views add to the unique vibes. Vegetarians should note that some items considered vegetarian here might include shrimp or grasshoppers due to cultural differences.
5. Levadura de Olla Restaurante
Levadura de Olla Restaurante is a gem with authentic dishes and flavors. The salsa at the beginning was spicy and delicious, and the cilantro mojito was unique and tasty. All the dishes were complex in flavor and simply amazing. Foodies will love this place and want to return!
4. Boulenc
Boulenc is an airy cafe-bakery offering artisan bread, pastries, and brunch dishes. The shakshuka was incredible! I tried several dishes, and each one was fantastic. It was so good, I had to come back twice. This place has become one of my favorite breakfast spots.
3. Lechoncito de Oro
Lechoncito de Oro opens every night at 8 pm. I got there right when it opened, so there was no line. I ordered one taco each of chicharron and pierna. The salsas are super spicy, and the chicharron has an amazing texture. The pierna taco is softer, juicier, and fattier both are incredible.
2. Tlayudas La Chinita
Tlayudas La Chinita is cash-only and has outdoor seating. The portions are large, and the service is friendly. If you haven’t tried a Tlayuda before, this is the place to start. It’s perfect for late-night munchies, and everyone around was smiling and enjoying their meals.
1. Ocote Cocina
Ocote Cocina offers an unforgettable dining experience. Each bite is perfection! Their unique tacos are packed with flavor and absolutely delicious. This place quickly became a favorite. The prices are amazing given the quality and presentation. If you’re looking for an unforgettable meal, this is it—Oaxaca truly is an epicenter for great food in Mexico.
There you have it, my top 10 restaurant recommendations in Oaxaca City. Whether you’re in the mood for tacos, tlayudas, or unique omakase, this city has something for everyone. Get ready to eat your way through this incredible city and enjoy every bite!
